Join MTCC for a virtual screening of the documentary “The Green Book: Guide to Freedom.”

About this event

Mosaic Templars Cultural Center will present the Smithsonian Channel documentary, “The Green Book: Guide to Freedom,” virtually at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 10, and again at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 10.

In the 1930s, a black postal carrier from Harlem named Victor Green published a book that was part travel guide and part survival guide. It was called “The Negro Motorist Green Book,” and it helped African Americans navigate safe passage across the U.S. well into the 1960s. Explore some of the segregated nation's safe havens and notorious "sundown towns," and witness stories of struggle as well as opportunity and triumph.

The documentary, courtesy of the Smithsonian Channel, is part of ongoing events related to “The Negro Motorist Green Book” exhibition, which is at MTCC from May 20 through Aug. 1. The Smithsonian Channel offers documentaries and shows that explore history, science, nature and more. Attendance of the MTCC livestream of “The Green Book: Guide to Freedom” is free. A link to the movie will be sent via Eventbrite.

“The Negro Motorist Green Book,” an exhibition developed by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES) in collaboration with award-winning author, photographer and cultural documentarian, Candacy Taylor, offers an immersive look at the reality of travel for African Americans in mid-century America and how the annual guide served as an indispensable resource for the nation’s rising African American middle class and evidence of a vibrant business class. “The Negro Motorist Green Book” is made possible through the support of Exxon Mobil Corporation.
