The Robust Life & Music of Noble Sissle, Sr. shares an energetic biography of a Black soprano from Indianapolis and his rise to become an international jazz conductor in Paris. In the early 1900's, Sissle witnessed many innovative men and women influencers.
Many people remember Sissle with his co-producer, Eubie Blake for the first all-Black produced Broadway musical, Shuffle Along. However, most readers don't know his charismatic personality from childhood and his advocacy for social and racial justice. This chapter book takes readers on a ride through music (spiritual, ragtime, jazz, blues, band, Great American Songbook, and Broadway). Historical milestones from 1870 to 2021 are highlighted with the (early 1900s, roaring twenties, great depression, prohibition and the golden era of jazz).
For young adult (YA) and adult readers, there are many lessons to learn from Sissle’s successful journey as both the audiences and music technologies evolved. Sissle overcame the obstacles of racism, discrimination, racial injustice, World War I, and World War II.
Sissle was a Sergeant in the 369th Regiment of the famed Harlem Hellfighters in France in World War I. Sissle led the 369th Regimental Band on a 191-day tour to share uplifting music for French and Allied forces and French citizens.
Lieutenant James Reese Europe, Sissle, and the regimental band introduced jazz to France. The Regimental band traveled thousands of miles and witnessed the vineyards and white clay of the Champagne sector, banks of the Rhine, mountains of Alsace Lorraine, Argonne Forest, and Paris (City of Lights). Vintage photos from France and the USA are included.
In the Argonne Forest, Privates Henry Johnson and Needham Roberts courageously fought off German soldiers. For these acts of bravery, the Regiment received France's highest military honor, the Croix de Guerre.
